
A two-day 12th Inter-University Environmental Debate Competition began at the Teachers-Students Centre auditorium of Dhaka University on Saturday.
Dhaka University Debating Society and the Department of Environment have jointly organised the competition with the theme ‘no more plastic pollution, it’s time to stop it’, said a press release.
DU pro-vice-chancellor for administration Professor Sayema Haque Bidisha inaugurated the debate competition as chief guest while DUDS moderator Professor Amirus Salat was present as the special guest at the inaugural ceremony, which was presided over by director general of the Department of Environment Md Kamruzzaman.
Sayema Haque said that as interpersonal communication and relationships between people were deteriorating, debates, sports activities and various cultural practices could play an important role in solving such social problems.
‘It is important to create awareness in preserving the environment and nature,’ she said and emphasised on creating correct policies, adopting environment-friendly activities and practicing debates based on environment-related topics.
Debate teams from 16 universities are participating in this debate competition.
Conducted by DUDS general secretary Ragib Anjum, Mirza Shawkat Ali, director of the climate change and international conventions of the Department of Environment, delivered welcome address while DUDS president Zubair Hossain delivered vote of thanks at the ceremony.
