Centre for Policy Dialogue executive director Fahmida Khatun on Tuesday said that the interim government of Bangladesh should announce a specific date regarding the next general elections.

It is the right moment to announce the date, said the CPD executive director while answering questions from reporters during the release of the third interim review of Bangladesh’s macroeconomic performance for FY2024-25 at its office in the capital.

Noting that the CPD did not make any interpretation about political economy in the report, Fahmida said that nine months under the interim government assumed power following the ouster of the Awami League regime in the wake of a mass uprising in August 2024 had already been passed.

A timeline for the much-needed polls between December 2025 and June 2026 has been announced by Muhammad Yunus, the chief adviser of the interim government.

But the polls should not be kept in the timeframe.

‘Time is mature to specify whether the voting will take place in December, January or February,’ said the CPD executive director.
